The next White Center Chamber of Commerce luncheon will be held Tuesday, Feb. 12, from Noon – 1:30 p.m. at the new Soul Kitchen Restaurant located at the corner of Roxbury and 16th Ave SW.
“We will announce and discuss a new Chamber-encouraged effort to try a weekly luncheon outreach program to serve our chronic homeless alcoholic population in White Center,” said Chamber President Mark Ufkes. “Outreach to the homeless, bringing them a short walk away from the business district, can allow them to meet folks who want to support them to recovery, while getting a weekly hot meal every Friday. Our goal is to help minimize the negative impacts of their lives in the business district (if there are any) and tell folks that White Center can continue to do our part to help address these types of community challenges.”
“This idea is one segment of a plan that has been developing through community outreach and discussion at monthly Homeless Summit meetings hosted by several local churches and Westside Baby, and encouraged by several members of the White Center Chamber board including, Mac McElroy (Mac’s Triangle Pub), Frank Cantwell (Holy Family School), and Aileen Sison (John L. Scott Realty).
A local restaurant in the heart of White Center has agreed to provide food for 40 individuals, once a month, for six months to help us try this idea. The first luncheon will be served on Friday, March 8, 2013.
Hope that you can join us for lunch and learn more about our effort. And feel free to invite others. We order off the menu.
Soul Kitchen’s address is 9600 16th Ave SW; (206) 762-2729.
