The Highline School District announced Tuesday (May 14) that “more extensive staff training and strong coordination with local law enforcement are the hallmarks of a proposal to improve safety and security” at local schools.

The proposal (download PDF here) will be presented to the community at a public meeting from 6 – 7:30 p.m. at the ERAC Center on Monday, May 20.

“If adopted by the school board, the district Safety and Security plan would not bring major changes to staff structure,” reads an announcement. “It does call for significant improvements in the extent and types of training required of Safety and Security officers. It also outlines joint training and collaboration with local law enforcement agencies.”

The proposal includes a vision statement and guiding principles that emphasize building relationships with students as a way to prevent school violence. It envisions Safety and Security personnel as mentors who students trust to help them solve issues that could lead to conflicts at school. The plan includes a rigorous hiring process to ensure that the best candidates are selected as Safety and Security staff.

The proposal was developed after several months of study that included input from staff and community members. The police chiefs of Des Moines, Normandy Park, Burien, and SeaTac and the South Precinct Commander from the King County Sheriff’s Office gave input on the plan. Safety consultant Roger Baker, a retired Des Moines police chief, did an analysis of the current safety program and made recommendations for improvement.

The public is invited to learn about the proposal at a community meeting:

“Include funding in the 2014 budget for the White Center Storefront Deputy,” it reads.

As of 3:30 p.m. on Monday, May 13, the petition only needed another 33 signatures.

This scholarship is a needs-based scholarship and is awarded annually to three graduating seniors from Highline School District who will be pursuing a college education.

This year, $36,000 in scholarships is being awarded to the following students:

Hector Diaz Contreras ($14,000 scholarship award)
Hector will graduate from Global Connections High School and plans to attend the University of Washington or Seattle University where he wants to study International Studies, with a minor in American Ethnic Studies, and then a Masters in Teaching so he can be a Social Studies teacher. Global Connections principal Rick Harwood, had this to say about Hector: “Hector demonstrates leadership to his peers by being a strong role model through his successful efforts to combine academic success, participation in extracurricular activities, and employment that allows him to help support his family and save for college.”

Nara Koirala ($14,000 scholarship award)
Nara will graduate from Highline High School and plans on attending Washington State University where he will study Mechanical Engineering. Nanci Leonard, a counselor at Highline High School, wrote in her letter of recommendation: “I have absolutely no doubt that Nara will make our world a better place and that his example will lead others to do the same. It has been my privilege to be his teacher.”

Oscar Alejandre ($8,000 scholarship award)
Oscar will graduate from Arts and Academics Academy and plans to attend the University of Washington where he will study Aeronautical Engineering. Paul Didier, his teacher at AAA writes: “Oscar has an outstanding reputation as a leader and role model among both teachers and students at the Arts and Academics Academy (AAA). He has incredible potential and is an “out-of-the-box” thinker. He is one of the most well-rounded, motivated students that I have had the pleasure to teacher in my ten years at AAA.”

SAVE THE DATE: THIS YEAR’S CHARITY GOLF TOURNAMENT TO SUPPORT STIA SCHOLARSHIPS IS JULY 22!
2013 marks the 13th anniversary of the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport Scholarship Charity Golf Tournament (sponsored by employees of HMS Host and volunteer employees and contractors of the Port of Seattle) to benefit the Highline Schools Foundation.

The proceeds from the tournament have contributed nearly one million dollars to support college scholarships and educational programs for the youth of the Highline School District.

This year’s Scholarship Golf Tournament will be held on July 22, 2013 at Fairwood Golf & Country Club in Renton. The Entry Level Golf Team includes golf for four players, cart, range balls, golf pro-shop voucher, a golfer’s gift package, on-course refreshments, and dinner. The Hole Sponsor Level Golf Team includes all the above plus golf attire, signage on the tee, advertising on the Sponsorship Board and name in tournament program.

New Advertiser Southwest Suburban Sewer District wants our Readers to know that staff and commissioners recently partnered with the Puget Sound Blood Center for a successful local blood donation drive.

Staff participation was well over 50% with many folks giving for the first time.

The donation event was open to all interested donors and organizers were very happy to have participation from Water District #49 staff, Valley View Sewer District staff, Highline School District staff, and City of Burien residents.

“Our combined efforts for this blood drive provided much needed blood to 75 local patients,” said Ron Hall, General Manager. “We have been asked to sponsor future blood drives and are planning to give it another go in about six months.”
