The Boeing Employees Choir is a concert choral group serving as The Boeing Company’s ambassador in song, sharing the gift of music with audiences in the Puget Sound Region of Washington State – as well as throughout the world. The choir has existed since the early 1940s. Today, we make about 25 appearances each year.

Composed primarily of Boeing employees, retirees and their families, our choir is a 501c(3) tax-exempt non-profit organization.

The Burien/White Center Rotary Club, founded in 1955, has a long and rich history of service to the community.

Over this 50+ year duration, club members have volunteered countless hours of service and generated hundreds of thousands of dollars which have been distributed back into the community.

For more information, visit their website here.

The Highline Historical Society is holding an online auction fundraiser, which runs until Tuesday, Dec. 15th, and offers local restaurants, foods, trips and unusual experiences – all perfect gifts for the holidays, all the while supporting a great local cause.

You can access the auction here:

www.highlinehistory.cmarket.com.

Proceeds from the auction will benefit the ongoing programs and activities of the Society, including their capital building campaign for the new Highline Heritage Museum on their property in “Old Burien.”

“We cannot thank our local vendors enough for their participation. I encourage everyone to take a look at the website and support the Society by bidding on something fun for the holidays,” said Terry Anderson, Society President.

The new Highline Heritage Museum, designed by Rohleder Borges Architects, will be located on the Southwest corner of SW 152nd Street and Ambaum Blvd. SW, where Karuna Yoga Arts is currently housed.

The online auction is hosted by cMarket, which is the country’s leading provider of non-profit online auction services. On any day there are as many as 200 cMarket auctions underway online nationwide. With their secure servers and a growing number of community-minded vendors, more and more shoppers are finding that this is an excellent way to shop close to home for the holidays and to also assist a worthwhile local charity.

King County Metro Transit will be operating with a reduced weekday schedule on Monday, Jan. 19 for the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.

That means some commuter-oriented routes will be canceled that day, and there will be individual trips canceled on other routes.

Many routes will have no changes.

This is the same reduced schedule that was used recently on Nov. 28, Dec. 26, Dec. 29, Dec. 30, Dec. 31, and Jan. 2.

It features more bus service than on weekends, but somewhat less than normal weekdays with some route or individual trip cancellations.

This schedule will be used on at least 10 days in 2009.

Burien’s El Dorado West Retirement Community is playing Santa for the White Center Food Bank this month by placing a “Giving Tree” in their front lobby.

Everyone is invited to pick a card from the tree and purchase a gift or give cash donations for that person, then bring the gift back to be placed underneath it.

El Dorado is also partnering with White Center’s Evergreen High School Football Team’s “Wolverines” to be Santa’s Helpers.

The “Giving Tree” will be in the front lobby of El Dorado West through December 31st, so everyone has plenty of time to participate. You can stop by El Dorado during business hours – they’re located at 1010 SW 134th Street, at the corner of Amnbaum and SW 134th in Burien (map below).

“The Wolverines” will be delivering the gifts to the Senior Patrons of the WCFB on January 8th.

In March of ’08 the WCFB implemented a “Seniors Only Day” for those over 60. Senior clients can receive food that helps them meet their unique dietary needs and builds in special social time.

Every month residents of El Dorado West volunteer during this time by serving coffee in what they call “Seniors Helping Seniors.”

And remember, food banks are really feeling the pinch of the recession, so any donation you can make is most appreciated, especially by your hungry neighbors.

[From our sister site The B-Town Blog comes this story about how and where you can help needy neighbors in the White Center/Burien area this holiday season:]

Burien/Normandy Park Fire Department’s Lt. Inspector John Zilke is at it again!

As in years past, John is coordinating the very large and important Christmas Outreach Program in the Burien and White Center areas. Our very own Burien Fire Department (King County Fire District 2, Burien & Normandy Park) has been helping needy families during the holidays for over 20 years.

This translates to thousands of families enjoying a happy holiday because of Burien’s generosity.

This year, with the help of the White Center DSHS, 73 local needy families have been identified to be recipients of Burien’s largess. Thirteen local businesses have volunteered to be drop-off locations and are accepting NEW toys, canned food, gift cards and cash. Thanks to both our local Fred Meyer and your cash donations, each family will also receive a turkey dinner.

All donations must be made by the morning of December 22. Upon final collection, John and our firefighters match the gifts with the families’ needs at Sunnydale School, where they will be loaded up and delivered by Santa Claus and others on December 23.

To help out our fire department, eleven departments within Highline Medical Center have each adopted one family. Sylvester Middle School students and teachers will be conducting in-school food drives as part of this community effort.

Some of the toys and food delivered to the Burien Fire Department the first day of the outreach program. For locations on where you can donate, please see the list below.

John knows that this is a particularly tough year to ask for donations, but adds. “Your donations bring light to the holidays for a needy family.”

Shorewood Christian School’s bell choir will be playing holiday music tonight (Wed., Dec. 3rd) at Westfield Southcenter Mall, starting at 7pm at the dining terrace of the food court.

They’ll return for another performance on Wed., Dec. 10th, starting at 1pm.

According to Hope Kerkof:

Westfield Southcenter invited the bell choir from Shorewood Christian School located in West Seattle to bring holiday cheer to the shoppers. The Shorewood Christian bell choir consists of 7 junior high students.  The school has had a bell choir for numerous years, and is now offering the community their musical entertainment.

Celebrating their 29th Anniversary, this is a big milestone year for Shorewood Christian.  The high school is currently in the expansion development phase with this being the first year offering 9th grade. Each subsequent year, they will be adding 10th, 11th, and 12th grade.  By the year 2011, they will be a full service school offering prekindergarten through 12th grade.  The school is a member of the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI) and is approved by the State of Washington.  Shorewood Christian School is open to many denominations with over 20 churches represented in their student body and staff. Students at Shorewood Christian benefit from an unparalleled educational experience.  It is a school of academic excellence, offering specialty classes including Spanish, Music, Drama, P.E., Art, Typing, Home Economics, and Bible.  Currently, their athletic program includes:  Flag Football, Cross Country, Track, Volleyball, and Basketball.

Shorewood Christian is committed to not only academic excellence, but also keeping education affordable. Their tuition is one of the most affordable private school rates in all of Seattle!  K-6th grade is only $440/month, 7th & 8th grade is $470/month, and 9th grade is $590/month.  Shorewood Christian School still has some grades, including 9th grade, open for enrollment.  For more information or to enroll, you can contact them at:

We dropped by the Dia de los Muertos celebration going on a few miles south at the Burien Community Center Saturday and took these photos:

This altar was created by Spanish II students at Highlines Global Connections High School (formerly Tyee).
