A very unique 9-liter bottle of Five Star Cellars 2006 Cabernet Savignon will be raffled off at the Poverty Bay Wine Festival next weekend (Saturday, March 6th & Sunday, March 7th) at the historic Landmark Event Center in Des Moines.
Now if you’ve never ventured the 11.6 miles or so south to this historic building, may we recommend that you give it a try next weekend? The Landmark Event Center (aka Landmark on the Sound – map here) is the former, historic Masonic Retirement home, and it smacks of a castle or stately mansion. Now throw in an excellent, entertaining and tasty fundraiser with outstanding wines and live music, and you’ve got a reason to head out.
Another reason of course is to win this one-of-a-kind, big, beautiful bottle, wich contains nine liters – equal to a full case of wine (!) – and is engraved with the Poverty Bay Wine Festival emblem on one side, and the Five Star label on the other.
This 2006 Cab was rated 91 points by Wine Spectator and 94 points by the Beverage Tasting Institute – that means it’s an excellent case of wine in one big bottle!
No purchase is necessary– this is a drawing for anyone who wants to enter – but you will have to show up at the festival, which is just $20 per person; for that amount, you’ll also receive a souvenir wine glass and 10 tokens, a sampling of delicious foods, and live music both days.
Also, for all you non-wine drinkers out there, Pike’s Brewing will also have a booth.
The value of the wine plus the engraving is $1,000!
The opening night Gala will be this Friday, March 5th at 7:30pm at the Landmark Event Center. The theme is A Night in the Vineyard. A lavish buffet will be provided by Anthony’s HomePort. Tickets for the gala are $75 in advance, $85 at the door. The ticket price includes food, entertainment, and wine.
Wine Fesival tickets are priced at $20 in advance and $25 at the door. Tickets for the Wine Festival and Gala are available at Corky Cellars, located at 22511 Marine View Drive in Des Moines (206-824-9462); or online at www.dmrotary.org.

The Highline Vintage Jazz Festival is the brainchild of Burien Arts’ board member and fixture in the local music scene, Lance Haslund. Lance is a part-time musician and lifetime lover of all music, particularly jazz. He has been promoter of small concerts in the Burien area for several years and says:
“The Highline Vintage Jazz Festival will fill a void in the local festival scene.
To my knowledge, until now the Puget Sound area has not provided a showcase for multiple styles of early jazz in one event.
As Burien emerges as one of the new vital places for the arts in the region, we pay tribute to the people who moved here and grew the community during the Big Band era, and offer a faithful rendering of the music of their youth.”
Burien Arts is a local non-profit dedicated to enriching the community by providing engaging and innovative arts programming to the Highline region and beyond. Vitally active since 1965, Burien Arts maintains a crucial role in the artistic fabric of the community.
Tickets to the event are available online through Brown Paper Tickets (www.brownpapertickets.com) or by calling: 1-800-838-3006. Tickets will also be available at the door on the day of the festival.

Half of the band is drinking in the parking lot before the show and the other half shows up minutes before they go on stage – the night is off to a perfect start for a punk rock concert.
The four member punk band Rat City Ruckus played recently at Studio 7 with the headlining The Blanx from Renton in a show put on by Local Chaos Productions. Their hard and hilarious songs about partying and boasting self destruction also add a sense of hometown pride by including local landmarks in the lyrics in such songs as “Rat City” and “South Park Slam” from their first album Quartres put out by Rockin’ Stan Records. On stage antics and perform instrumental dynamics possessed by a seasoned nationally touring band gets the small but loyal crowd pumped up.
White Center has the punk band that has it all.
Brett, bass and vocals, pounds rhythm like Matt Freeman of Rancid and has a rebelliously adolescent mind of a young Fat Mike of NOFX and yes, this is a good thing. Dustin, the quiet drummer, looks as though he barely moves his arms yet Dustin hits harder and faster on the skins than I have seen in long time. Tony on guitar and bad pirate jokes according to the liner notes in Quartres, can hammer out on the six string without missing a beat and at the same time bring comedy by blowing in Brett’s ear when singing, challenging him to not botch the song. Lead guitarist and vocals, Phil screams lyrics with classic punk style and plucks his guitar that would make anyone want to join in the mosh pit.
If there is anyone looking out for a new sound, wanting to add more to their punk rock library or have the need to get rid of some angst I implore you to go see Rat City Ruckus. The band’s sophomore album, Mustard Shot, is due out by the end of June. You can see Rat City Ruckus tearing it up next at The Comet 6/11, Blue Moon 7/2 and Full Tilt 7/18 for Jubilee Days.
Here’s a track called “Out On The Streets” to whet your eardrums with:

[EDITOR'S NOTE: This Review originally appeared on our sister site The B-Town Blog, but we're re-publishing it here because The Barrel is so dang close to White Center.]

The term “dive bar” conjures up negative images of dark, smoky, smelly taverns, shady staff and questionable menus full of deep fried mystery food.
The Barrel Tavern is in no way any of these things.
In a time where trendy bars are becoming dives or using gimmicks to lure you in, while dive bars are becoming trendy bars by serving 40s or watered down versions of drinks they call “specialty beverages,” there are fewer and fewer places serving up a good old dash of reliability.
After numerous visits, purely for research of course, I found there was far more at The Barrel than meets the eye:
- The moment you walk in you are treated like a regular.

- There are no unidentifiable smells that overwhelm you when you walk in. Rich local history.
- Plenty of parking. Come on it used to be a Drive In! Built in 1963 as the “Triple XXX Drive In,” owner Linda Enright has worked hard to keep the integrity of the original landmark building.

- Bikers welcome…but you can come too.
- Live bands that you actually want to see. And did I mention NO COVER!
- Seattle’s longest-running open Jam Session every Tuesday.
- Karaoke every Saturday and sometimes Fridays. Hundreds of great karaoke singers…and 3 bad ones.
- The most dedicated owner you may ever meet. She cares about her customers and her community.
- No drama policy. Do not test this one – trust me, the staff will win.
- Free poker tourney every Wednesday.
- A menu that could put most dinners to shame. Fresh, well made pub grub that will have you returning for more than just a beverage. Insiders tip: go for the fresh, not deep fried tacos, the Barrel burger (fresh never frozen) or the Barrel chicken sandwich.
- Saturday & Sunday breakfast menu that could cure any hangover.
- If you need more than just liquid entertainment there are darts, a pool table, pull tabs, video games, and flat screens always playing the game.
- A jukebox that is filled with only the greatest classic rock, country and 80’s faves.
Leave your club clothes at home and forget the overdone hair, this is one spot it won’t work.
Be prepared to sit back, hang out with old friends and even make some new ones.
If you’re looking for a dependable neighborhood bar with a ton of character, in more ways than one, you need not look any further than The Barrel. 11051 1st Ave S

The White Center/Burien Rotary Club is holding its annual Holiday Benefit Concert on Monday, Dec. 15th, starting at 7pm at the Highline Performing Arts Center in Burien (map below).
This benefit concert will feature the music of the Boeing Employees Choir. Here’s an audio taste of their talents, of them singing selections from Strauss’ ‘Die Fledermaus’ with the Bellevue Philharmonic Orchestra:
Admission is free with a non-perishable food item, and all proceeds go directly to both the White Center and Highline Food Banks.

Just a gentle reminder to all WCB Readers – our Food Bank Fundraiser is this Monday night, Aug. 25th, from 6pm on, at Elliott Bay Brewery, which is located at 255 SW 152nd Street in downtown Burien (map below).
This event is co-sponsored by our sister website, The B-Town (Burien) Blog, and will serve as both a lively “Blog Party” featuring local talent (two local bands and a local comedian will be playing, starting at 8pm), as well as a fundraiser for both the White Center and Highline Food Banks.
There is NO cover charge, but a suggested donation of two cans (or boxes) of food would be appreciated (there will be at least one large barrel visible and ready for donations throughout the night).
From the White Center Food Bank website:
The White Center Food Bank serves more than 1,200 hungry families each month. In 2007, we provided enough food for more than 53,000 individuals including 21,000 children under the age of 18. We could not provide these services to the White Center community without the generosity of our donors and volunteers. However, more help is needed to meet the overwhelming demands of this community!
If you can’t make it to the party, you can donate online directly to the WCFB by clicking here.
For more insight into how the current recession is affecting food banks in the northwest, read this Seattle Times article; here’s a snippet:
As more residents struggle with the rising price of gas and food, the organizations that are their safety net are beginning to falter. Providers are running seriously over budget on fuel. Volunteer drivers are quitting. Staff members who commute are finding jobs closer to home. Demand is up as much as a third at some food banks — and donations are down that much or more.
We will be “blogging live” from the event, but hope to see (and meet) you there in person!
