White Center Jubilee Days CarnivalThe final day of the White Center Jubilee celebration starts off with gray skies and cool temperatures, but the promise of sunshine later today still lingers.

Despite events wrapping up today, there’s a full slate of entertainment for residents to enjoy. The street fair is in full swing on 17th Avenue SW, between 98th and 102nd, adjacent to the musical stage and beer garden, and will run until 6 PM tonight.

There is also live music on the stage near the street fair all day long, wrapping up with headliners The Dusty 45s performing from 5PM to 6PM.

Those looking for a little more excitement will find the carnival up and running until midnight tonight over at Steve Cox Memorial Park on SW 102nd Street.

We’d like to welcome our latest Advertiser to The Waterland Blog – DealPop – a new online and mobile social buying site from WhitePages that offers consumers up to 70 percent off the best places to eat, shop and have fun in greater Seattle area.

To learn more, as well as sign up, just click here.

Here’s what they’d like to share with our Readers:

WhitePages (www.whitepages.com), the largest and most trusted online directory, today announced it has entered the social buying category with the launch of DealPop (www.dealpop.com) in its hometown of Seattle. With the official launch, DealPop will leverage the more than 100 million local and business searches conducted monthly at WhitePages.com and 411.com to determine the most popular places to eat, shop, and have fun. This knowledge as well as picks by DealPop’s local insiders will allow the company to work with merchants to provide the most relevant deals for consumers at local favorites and hidden gems. DealPop is immediately available in Seattle and will launch with popular local favorites such as the Yellow Leaf Cupcake Company, the Alibi Room, Twist, Mad Pizza, and Unexpected Productions. DealPop will expand to major metropolitan areas in the coming months.

“With the emergence of social buying sites, I refuse to pay full-price when trying a new restaurant, bar or even a spa,” said Cindy Locke, a deal-seeking sales consultant who lives in Seattle, WA and subscribes to Groupon, LivingSocial and now DealPop. “I’m excited to use a service from such a trusted brand like WhitePages – one that truly knows the Seattle market and will provide the real inside scoop on new restaurants, stores, salons, and entertainment venues in my hometown.”

WhitePages, a top 50 online and mobile website where more than 20 million people per month visit for personal and business contact information, will offer deals of up to 70 percent off, with each deal available for purchase for a set number of hours. Seattleites can sign up for DealPop at www.dealpop.com and immediately start receiving a daily email with fantastic deals. DealPop customers will receive the following benefits:

  • Discover cool things to do and hot places to go based on popular local business searches on WhitePages as well as picks by DealPop’s local insiders;
  • The ability to share via Facebook, Twitter and email, turning the deal into a social activity that can be enjoyed with friends or family;
  • The opportunity to receive DealPop points that can be applied to a future purchase by sharing a great deal with someone who then signs up and purchases that deal;
  • Access to helpful customer service representatives to answer any questions about each daily deal;
  • Unlike other daily deal sites, everyone gets the deal at DealPop because there isn’t a minimum number of people who need to purchase before the deal goes through;
  • Email reminders before the expiration date of a voucher to encourage consumers to use their purchases

“DealPop is about discovery,” said Kevin Nakao, chief operating offer at WhitePages. “Not only will we find the neighborhood gems – the cozy little bistro in Ballard with great food, the hilarious comedy show that everyone is talking about, or a great spa to relax and rejuvenate at – but people will be able try these places without having to pay full price, a combination that consumers won’t want to pass up and share with their friends.”

From sister site The B-Town Blog comes word that El Tianguis, the first Latino-themed street market in the region, is set to open this Sunday, May 30th, in the Town Square Park of downtown Burien (which is less than four miles south of White Center).

The weekly market will feature goods and services that are traditionally found in open-air markets in Latino countries, including food and drink, fresh fruits and vegetables, clothing, arts and crafts, and much more.

The market is open not only to Latinos, but to anyone who appreciates Latino culture, products and amenities.

Not to be confused with a swap meet or a flea market, El Tianguis Latino Market will offer up a fun, family atmosphere that is a fusion between a Farmer’s Market and a street fair. Vendors are encouraged to offer their products at competitive prices so that clients feel welcome to do their regular shopping at the market as well as to indulge in exotic, specialty items.

According to their website, shoppers can expect:

Products will include Latino food and beverages, arts and crafts, home and garden, clothing, electronics, and many other items that are traditionally available in markets in Latino countries.

This weekly market is being put on by El Mercado, PC, a not-for-profit group that is:

…dedicated to the cultural and economic development of the Latino community, and has chosen Burien to launch the market because of the city’s earnest desire to integrate its growing Latino population with the general public. By reaching out to Latinos and offering them a stake in the community, the city of Burien has proven to be a shining example of how to tear down the walls that divide us rather than build them up, of how to embrace our differences rather than to reject them.

The market will be held on Sundays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Burien Town Square Park on 5th Place SW between SW 150th & 152nd Streets – at the same location where the current Discover Burien Farmers Market is held.

For more information, or to apply to be a vendor, contact El Mercado, PC, at info@elmercado.org or at 206-334-2285. You can also get more details at their website here: http://elmercado.org/

The White Center Blog welcomes its latest Advertiser: The Yard Sale, located at 14017 First Avenue South #101 in Burien!

You don’t have to wait until summer anymore to find those hidden treasures by driving all over town, wasting your time and gas – you’ll find them waiting for you at this new store, which had its grand opening today (Nov. 2nd).

Owned by The Cross Church and Discipleship Center of White Center, The Yard Sale’s proceeds go to sustaining the ministry Pastor Jerry Wilson started at the church in 2003. The ministry is dedicated to helping people who have become distressed through crisis in their lives. For information about this life changing program, go to www.crosschurchseattle.com.

Here is a list of some of the products you’ll find at The Yard Sale:

  • New and used clothes
  • Electronics
  • Ceramics
  • Paintings
  • Jewelry
  • Games and toys
  • Collectibles
  • Appliances
  • Furniture
  • Books
  • Cards
  • Kitchenware

Also on site every Saturday through November will be Scat the Cat!

This past spring, Scat, who has been the pet therapy cat at the church for the past several years, suffered several wounds, including a seven-inch gash on its side, three broken ribs and severe internal injuries (a local man has been charged in the attack. He plead Not Guilty to a first degree animal cruelty charge in King County Superior Court.)

Pasado’s Safe Haven, a local non-profit animal rescue organization, covered Scat’s medical expenses.

Church members said when Scat first came to the church, he was very leery of people. But over time, he became more socialized and eventually grew into a lovable therapy cat.

Donations are gladly accepted at the Yard Sale store or at the Cross Church & Discipleship Center located 1320 SW 102nd Street in White Center.

The Cross Church can also provide hard working people with a variety of skills to help you with projects around your house or business if you are looking for some hired helping hands.

So stop by and help support this wonderful new branch of their ministry and say Hi to everybody.

The White Center Blog welcomes Super Deli Mart, our newest Advertiser!

New owner Min Chung has been in the grocery business since he was young and has vast experience having managed his first store when he was only 17 years old.

Super Deli Mart’s grand reopening was this past Labor Day weekend and it was a big success. He made and sold a lot of Hoagies!

Min welcomes you to Super Deli Mart.

“What makes these Hoagies so good?” we asked.

“It’s the mamu.”

“Mamu?”

Min said “it’s the secret sauce used on the original Hoagy’s Corner sandwiches and we still use the same secret ingredients and we make it fresh daily.”

These sandwiches include:

  • The Cheesy British
  • The Canadian
  • The German
  • The French
  • The American
  • The Italian
  • And many others

Min’s Super Deli Mart is unique because they not only have those wonderful Hoagies, but they are now offering full and half size kegs to go with stock on hand and a menu of all kegs offered in the Seattle area!

If you pre-order a week in advance your keg will be waiting for you at a perfectly-chilled 36 degrees.

They also offer a selection of wines at great prices. Buy four bottles, get an additional 10% off and you can mix and match!

Min enjoys a good cigar on occasion so he offers a great selection of premium hard rolled cigars at great prices.

Min grew up in Burien. He grew up eating these Hoagies. He and his father would stop at the store on their way to Vashon Island to fish and fuel up on Hoagies purchased at the same store that he now owns, 22-years later. His lifelong dream is realized!!

Min would like to thank all the folks who stopped by this Labor Day Weekend making his grand re-opening a rousing success. And a special thanks to those who came all the way from Burien to stop in and say Hi.
