On Wednesday night (Aug. 18th), Burien’s Tin Room hosted the opening party for sponsors of the 2010 “Brat Trot” 5K race, which will be on Sunday, Sept. 19th.

This year’s all-day event will benefit White Center’s own WestSide Baby, along with Safe Kids of South King County, as well as Multicare at Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital and Health Center.

Last year’s race brought in nearly $25,000 for local charities, and this year’s will include even more activities, including a German Oompah Band, a “Seize the Sausage” race, beer garden, and a block party emceed by none other than Burien’s own inimitable “Yodeling Dominatrix” Manuela Horn.

The brainchild of Tin Room owner Danny House (aka “Dan the Sausageman“), the original race drew more than 700 people together for a day of fun and festivities, and most important, fundraising. Of course this year, Danny wants to do more.

This year’s 5K race begins in Olde Burien on SW 152nd, widely circling Lake Burien before finishing to cheering crowds around the corner of 10th SW and back onto SW 152nd.

2010 brings the addition of a 1 mile+ “Seize the Sausage” race, perfect for kids and adults alike looking for a shorter venue. Runners can dash out, grab their Bratton and race back to the same finish line as those in the 5K.

5K Individual Race
This 5K course is generally flat with few even slight grades. Runners will be primarily on blacktop with a bit of gravel and grass. Race is clearly marked with live hand wavers to keep you on the course and trained flaggers and police officers at busy intersections. Runners can expect a nice run through neighborhoods with glimpses of beautiful Lake Burien and other parts of our charming city. Timing is chip-driven and provided by BuDu Racing.

The Burien Brat Trot starts and finishes nestled into one of greatest festivals of the fall — Octoberfest. Beginning at 10:30 am on September 19th the band strikes up and begins to play in Old Burien. All day event goers can enjoy brats, the beer garden, a german oompah band,water weenie races, booths and of course the Chicken Dance. Local restaurants and shops will be open for business with drink and event specials. Entertaining again this year is the Austrian Yodeler Manuela Horn.

In addition to marking your calendars for the race day, you might also want to pencil in Friday, Sept. 17th as well – that’s the night of the Brat Trot Pub Crawl, which, if it’s anything like last year’s, will be amazingly fun.

The White Center Eagles have breakfast every Sunday from 9am – Noon, and this Sunday (July 25) they’ll be doing a fundraiser to help “Stuff the Bus” for WestSide Baby – bring in a package of diapers and you’ll get $2 off.

Most breakfasts are regularly $6 and that includes coffee and juice.  It is open to the public and kids are welcome.

There’s two great events in the works for White Center Dads this weekend; a Dad’s Night Out at the White Center Eagles on Saturday to benefit Westside Baby, and a free Father’s Day Concert on Sunday at Big Al’s Brewery. Send Dad to the Dad’s Night Out on Friday to raise money for a good cause, take him to the all ages show at Big Al’s Brewery on Sunday, or give him both for Father’s Day!

Guy’s Night Out is being held at the White Center Eagles on Father’s Day Eve, Saturday June 19. Doors open at 5:00, and the Texas Hold’Em tourney will start around 5:30.  Proceeds will benefit WestSide Baby, a local nonprofit dedicated to “provid[ing] essential items to local children in need by collecting and distributing diapers, clothing, and equipment.”  Buy-in to the poker tourney is $50.00, and includes a spaghetti dinner.  Send Dad with a few dollars for beer money: Big Al Brewery has donated a keg for the event, and pints will be going for $2, with $1 from every beer going directly to WestSide Baby.  A raffle with great prizes (yet to be announced) will run for the entire evening, and in between rounds attendees can bid on auction items like Seahawks tickets, a condo in Ocean Shores, a Half-Day Beer Tour, a gift certificate for electrical work, and snowboards. Dads who decide to bow out of the poker tourney can enjoy themselves at the pool tables or horseshoe pits.

On Sunday, treat Dad to a fun night out at Big Al Brewing, where acclaimed alternative jazz band Reptet will be putting on a free all-ages show.  Reptet has been described as “’arresting, compelling and just plain cranked-up!’ with stage shows evolving into transformative performance art pieces using costumes, story telling, dance routines and absurdist humor.”

As always at Big Al’s outdoor venue, families are welcome to bring their own food or have food delivered, and the family dog is welcome to come along to celebrate Father’s Day also.

The White Center Blog, along with our sister site The B-Town Blog, look forward to seeing as many of our Readers and Neighbors as possible this coming Saturday, Nov. 14th, at the White Center Albertsons for a special Thanksgiving-related food drive: our 2nd Annual Turkeys N’ Diapers Fundraiser!

It’ll run from 10am to 4pm, and all donations will go to the White Center Food Bank (food) and WestSide Baby (diapers & baby stuff).

Albertsons is located at 16th Avenue SW and SW 106th Street in White Center.

We’ll be collecting turkeys and diapers (yes, that’s correct: turkeys and diapers!).

Important note about the diapers – says Nancy Woodland, Executive Director of WestSide Baby:

“We only need diapers in large sizes, Size 5 or 6 or Pull-ups in size 4T. Thanks!”

Stuffing and canned vegetables and other Thanksgiving-related food items would be greatly appreciated.

Donations in the form of cash and checks (made out to “White Center Food Bank”) will also be gratefully accepted.

The crew will be lead again this year by the blog’s own Bart Bryan, host of the recurring interview segments “Whaddaya Think?”

“We raised over $1,100 last year. Let’s double that this year!” said Bart. “Folks around here can really use the help!”

The White Center Food Bank will make available the food, as they do year-round, to nearby families in need.

The Food Bank works hand-in-hand with WestSide Baby, a nonprofit organization that collects previously-owned items for children and babies and distributes them free of charge to South King County families in need.

In 2008 WestSide Baby served more than 12,000 children.
