Making Changes Stick: Hypnosis and New Year Resolutions

It’s almost a cliche:

    • We make our New Year’s Resolution.
    • We hit the ground running on January 1st (or 2nd…or 3rd…).
    • We feel energized and enthused.
    • This year is going to be different.
    • But then we look up and it’s suddenly February. Resolution? What resolution?
    • Oh well, maybe next year…

The reason we sometimes find change so difficult is because we are forgetting to ask an important question:

What is the basic and fundamental need that the behavior we want to change is trying to meet?

For example, let’s say you’ve decided that you’ve been eating too much sugar and want to eat healthier in the coming year. You might be able to make this change by sheer will power. Sometimes that works. A lot of times it doesn’t.

What you have to understand is that the old behavior-eating too much sugar-has been serving an important purpose for you.

For one thing, eating sweets is pleasurable. You enjoy it and it makes you feel good. Maybe it also helps you manage stress. Or maybe curling up on the couch with that bowl of ice cream helps you stave off feelings of loneliness, sadness, or even depression.

The point is, eating sweets has become a strategy for attaining and maintaining a sense of wellbeing. As a result, subconsciously we become very resistant to changing the old strategy. And why not? Up until now, it’s worked!

One way to help ourselves create the long-lasting, healthy changes we want to make in our lives is through hypnosis. By entering the relaxed and focused state of hypnotic trance, we are able to communicate more directly with our subconscious mind. While in trance we can acknowledge our deep need for wellbeing while creating powerful suggestions for healthier ways to meet that need.
