The King County Sheriff’s Office announced on Friday, Mar. 20, 2020 that crime rates are significantly lower during the current COVID-19 outbreak compared to last year at this time:
-
- VIOLENT CRIMES: DOWN –24%
- PROPERTY CRIME: DOWN –26%
Here’s more info from KCSO:
With many of us telecommuting and practicing good social distancing, we thought we’d pull up a crime rate comparison to see if the COVID-19 outbreak is having any impact on crime rates in King County.
Here’s what we found, by comparing the first two weeks of March 2019 with the first two weeks of March this month.
This is a very general overview, but both violent crime and property crime have dropped.
These stats are for all of unincorporated King County and our many contract cities.
This is a great trend. But, we don’t want folks to let their guard down. We recommend that you stay vigilant, lock your doors and windows, make sure you bring valuables inside and turn on outside lights in the evening before going to bed.
We also recommend you take extra precautions if you are going to parks or trailheads to take walks because you have cabin fever. We are still seeing a fair number of car prowls, so don’t make your car a target. Remove all valuables from view and do not hide cellphones in consoles and wallets or purses under seats. Crooks know that trick.
Maybe they could focus their effort on traffic enforcement then. Lots of people walking in neighborhoods paired with drivers doin 10-15 over on 25mph streets. Someone is going to get hurt.
I don’t trust these numbers. I know I read earlier Seattle had an increase of something like 86% for property crimes. My friends car has been broken into a couple times and I hear and see way more police. There must have been a crazy influx in crime between May 20th and now, April 11th
Hey CHris I think they mean the numbers are down not that all crime has stopped . Also the numbers for Seattle are different than white center . White center is ran by king county officers and Seattle has Seattle police . Then it depends on the neighborhood sounds like your friend has a car prowler hitting up his block . One car prowler can do a lot since school is out we have a lot of teenagers at the age of figuring out . If they want to be dumb and break the law or go the right way and not break the law . Unfortunately some make the wrong decision and find car prowling as a pass time .
Then if they are caught by the police it’s a slap on wrist they out in a few hours (after saying sorry to parents while using the pouty sad face) to do it all over again more slaps on wrist . Unless if a owner catches them put’s a bullet in them . But if they are a different race than the owner. Well people think they pull the trigger for that reason and only for that reason in this day and age .
Tell your friend to not leave anything of any value in his car . He does not have kids a trick he could try is putting random change in his center console or ashtray if car has one but hide some rusty but sharp razor blades in it so if some idiot comes to steal it they get a little surprise . Hopefully will learn a lesson .
